NANO & LUKUMAΔES
CELEBRATING 200 YEARS OF MODERN GREECE
Through their 2021 collaboration, Lukumades and NANO wish to celebrate 200 years since the Greek revolution for independence against the Ottoman Empire in 1821, marking the beginning of the nation as a modern state.
Lukumades is one of the most popular food establishments in Athens. It specialises in the creation of the traditional Greek desert of "loukoumades" and has infused it with modern twists and flavours. Its fame has spread outside Greece's borders, having been featured in famous publications such as The New York Times, USA Today and Time Out magazine. Their food is so great that even royalty flock to the establishment - with Prince Charles and Camila stopping for a bite when they visited Athens.
Much like Lukumades with its play on the traditional Greek fried dough ball dessert, NANO’s creations pay homage to Greek culture and history by depicting elements of national costume which are derived from the age of 1821’s fight for independence in his distinctive mosaic pop style.
The three art pieces created depict a man and woman dressed in national Greek dress of the age of 1821, as well as the well loved Greek "Tsarouchi", a red clog like shoe with a large black pom-pom which is worn today by the Greek national guard.
